The music video for “Spicy” from aespa’s most recent mini-album, “MY WORLD,” has just been published. From their pre-release MV “Welcome to My World (Feat. Naevis)” released prior to the album’s release, the song portrays an entirely different concept.
Mala Tang features Karina, Gisele, Wendt, and Ning Ning as the popular girls at school, parodying your favorite teen movies from the 1990s and 2000s (like “Mean Girls”), or as the “powerless”—getting ready in front of the bathroom mirror, having a good time in a fancy mansion’s pool, or having a good time all night—all thanks to their exquisite Y2K with style.

The song itself is a cheerful, fun party song that echoes the tone of the video, with the line “I’m too spicy for your heart” repeated in the chorus:

Different from the assertive image previously displayed by aespa, the title single “Spicy” is an upbeat dance song. It displays free and unfettered energy with a new mood, and the music video (MV) adds fashion charm in the style of a young college movie.

KARINA said, “In the past, we mainly told stories about fighting. As a girl group, I think it is very novel and unforgettable experience to continue this kind of story. I am very grateful for the worldview, which broadens the range of music we can make.” Ning Ning Then he said, “I think aespa is a group with two sides. Although it has sung many combat songs so far, this is the first time to sing a popular song, and it will continue to try in the future.”

If only Spicy could incorporate a stronger song into this dynamic production! As is common these days, the song puts too much emphasis on chanting and gestures. There’s very little room for the melody, which feels underdeveloped even when the chorus accentuates the band’s effortless singing. Instead, instrumental music does the heavy lifting. Its consistent energy keeps Spicy feeling big and exciting throughout. However, the song comes across as a one-trick pony that keeps revolving around the same patterns and ideas. I hope it enjoys Next Level-style longevity, but I doubt it
