The Nurse (2023): the true story of Christina Aistrup Hansen
The Danish TV series The Nurse, released on Netflix in 2023, is based on the true story of Christina Aistrup Hansen, a night nurse sentenced in 2017 for murder. There aren’t many sources in English about what happened, but this article in Swedish explains in detail what happened. Below we will tell you the actual events behind the series.
In 2016, Christina Aistrup Hansen was detained in connection with the deaths of three patients at the Danish Nykbing Falster Hospital. The patients included a 72-year-old male who passed away in 2012 and two others who passed away on the same day, February 28, 2015: an 86-year-old woman and a 66-year-old guy. High concentrations of the drugs morphine and diazepam, also referred to as Valium, were discovered in every case. Additionally, Christina Aistrup Hansen was always the hospital department’s night nurse.
Pernille Larsen, one of her coworkers who was successfully represented in the television series The Nurse, began to have leads. They informed the police with the aid of her lover, Dr. Niels Lunden, who worked in the same division. Shortly after, Christina Aistrup Hansen was taken into custody.
The case was one of the most prominent ones that the Danish media covered. As you can see in this article, the nurse gained notoriety in Denmark as the “Devil of Death” (ddsdjaevel in Danish). It was established that she was the one giving those individuals their morphine and diazepam injections. In 2016, she was given a life term in jail for three murders and one attempted murder (on February 28, 2015, another patient survived thanks to the drugs Christina had injected). The charge was “attempted murder” in 2017, but the sentence was changed to 12 years since it was impossible to establish that the drugs morphine and diazepam were the cause of the victim’s death.
Christina Aistrup Hansen is still incarcerated in a Danish prison as of the present, 2023. Hertrionic personality disorder, a type of personality disorder characterized by excessive attention-seeking activities, was identified in her. She was drugging the patients in accordance with this diagnosis in order to save them right away. Except she couldn’t in three of the four situations.
Kristian Corfixen had an in-person conversation with Christina Aistrup Hansen while researching The Nurse, a fictionalized account of her genuine life. Many people in this room, she said, “talk about one day coming to terms with your judgment. However, I haven’t arrived there yet. She also acknowledged that she has attempted suicide once and that she continues to experience intense anger and frustration.
Her sentence will end in 2028. After that, she will be again a free woman, although she won’t be able to work as a nurse again.
